Abstract I examine how one central aspect of the family environment—sibling sex composition—affects women’s gender conformity. Using Danish administrative data, causally estimate effect having a second-born brother relative to sister for first-born women. show that women with acquire more traditional roles as measured through their choice occupation and partner. This results in stronger response motherhood labor market outcomes. As relevant mechanism, provide evidence increased gender-specialized parenting families mixed-sex children.
